iTunes U needs more attention

I am sure by now that most people are sick of hearing about the Apple Education event but here comes another post.

I am in my final year of University at the moment, so a lot of the new stuff introduced will not stick with me. The new things for iTunes U however, will stick.

I have too broad an interest. I have been very interested in computing and Languages, even though I am an Aeronautical Engineering major. I cannot take the Computing or Language classes that I want because they do not fit into my curriculum, but iTunes U makes it possible for me to do so on my own time, even past my time in University.

The latest update makes it very easy to watch lectures, read handouts and actually learn well. On the iPad and iPhone.

On the Mac (and I guess the PC too) we are stuck with iTunes U bundled into the already bloated iTunes, while on iOS iTunes U is now its own app that does what it needs to do well.

Why can’t iTunes U be decoupled from iTunes in the same way for the Mac? It would help tremendously. iTunes U fills me with a lot of hope and glee, but it needs to keep improving along with all of Apple’s education initiatives. This is a good step, but it is not end game.

(On a side note, I have two younger sisters — one in primary education and one in secondary education. For the both of them, it interests me how their education can be changed and improved. There have already been a big laptop initiative for the both of them that I never got until I was in college, and their education already seems so different to my time. I only hope it gets better. It has to.)
